Good Monday, everyone! Today’s first reading is drawn primarily from the first chapter of the Book of Jonah, a story many of us can relate to. Like Jonah, we often face moments when God calls us to tasks that feel daunting or overwhelming.
In this scripture, the Lord commands Jonah to go to Nineveh and “preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.” This is no small request. God asks Jonah to confront an entire city about its sinfulness—a task that would intimidate anyone. Addressing someone’s faults is difficult enough, but preaching against the sins of a whole community? That’s a terrifying prospect.
Faced with the weight of this command, Jonah flees. Who could blame him? He likely feared the consequences of openly rebuking the people of Nineveh. Most of us struggle to accept correction, and some react with anger when confronted with their wrongs. Proclaiming such a message to an entire city could easily provoke hostility from many, if not most, of its inhabitants.
Like Jonah, we sometimes find ourselves called to do hard things—things that may be unpopular in today’s world. For some, simply living an authentic Christian life in our modern culture feels like a monumental challenge. When faced with these difficulties, it’s tempting to run from God’s call, avoiding the path He has set before us. But as Jonah discovered, we cannot hide from God.
Jonah’s attempt to escape leads him to a boat, where a violent storm threatens to sink the vessel. The crew, suspecting that the storm is a divine response to Jonah’s disobedience, throws him overboard. It’s then that Jonah is swallowed by a great fish, where he remains for three days—alone with no one to turn to but God.
This story reminds us that God never abandons us when He calls us to act. He equips us with the grace to face every challenge, whether it’s a trial, a triumph, or a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. When fear grips us, that’s the moment to lean into God through prayer, not to turn away. He is always there, waiting for us to seek Him.
God provides the grace we need for every step of our journey. Even when the mountain ahead seems too steep to climb, we must remember that it is the God of the universe who placed it before us—and it is the same God who will guide us over it. Don’t wait until you’re “swallowed by a fish” to turn to God. He is listening right now.
